Mark Steiner, 1942–2020

He was a leading philosopher of mathematics, who was especially well known for his books The Applicability of Mathematics as a Philosophical Problem (1998, Harvard University Press) and Mathematical Knowledge (1975, Cornell University Press) and his pioneering work on explanation in mathematics.
